Welcome to Country - Brimbank Tree Planting Day

Many Australians have limited contact with our Indigenous People and never get the chance to experience the beauty of Australian Indigenous Culture. The greatest fear is that this culture could be lost if we don’t take steps now to protect it.

Last Tuesday our school was invited by to participate in a Tree Planting with Brimbank Council to plant understorey plants in the grasslands around the school oval. The day began with a welcome from Uncle Bill, an Indigenous Elder who performed a Welcome to Country ceremony for the whole school.

Throughout the day all students ventured down to the school oval which connects to Taylor Creek to participate
in the planting sessions. Thank you to Anna Moodie and Will from Brimbank Council for organising such a
rich and memorable event.

The Welcome to Country ceremony demonstrates respect for all indigenous people and acknowledges the spiritual, physical and cultural connection their ancestors have with their 'country' as the first people of the land now known as Victoria.

The connection to land is a reminder to all of us of the importance of ‘belonging’ and the sense of pride in
ourselves and the land surrounding our beautiful school.
